Comme promis, je  vais vous faire un petit résumé sur ce que j'ai découvert à propos des totems du canada, illustré par quelques croquis et avec quelques commentaires...

On en a tous vu dans les livres, les B-D cet immense tronc d'arbre sculpté avec un espèce d'entassement bestiaire et qui représente parfaitement l'art des indiens d'Amerique. On se rappelle que des animaux sont sculptés dedans, mais on ne sait pas trop à quoi ca sert, pourquoi c'est là, quelle signification il y a  dedans et surtout comment ca se lit.

Les totems ou "mats totémiques" se trouvent en majeur partie sur la côte Ouest du Canada, particulièrement en British Columbia (du côté de Vancouver, là où les JO 2010 vont avoir lieu). Ils sont désignés comme "chefs" par les autochtones. C'est le bas qu'il faut aller pour découvrir cet art dans la plus pure tradition et admirer ces sculptures géante. Mais vous pourrez en voir un au musée du quai Branly à Paris si ca fait trop loin pour le moment.

Vie et Mort d'un Totem  ?

Un totem, est fait en cèdre (pas celui du Liban, mais celui du canada, c'est plus grand et plus costaud qu'un érable). Il est taillé à la main avec des outils par expert de la gravure sur bois. Ce qu'il faut savoir est qu'un totem une fois planté dans le sol, ne doit recevoir aucune couche de bondex, ni de corde pour le redresser dans un sens ou un autre.

Un totem n'est jamais remplacé, déplacé ni réparé, il doit vivre sa vie. La durée de vie approximative est de 80 années (comme les tortues), mais cela peut être plus court (60 ans, comme Johnny) si il est exposé au vent et au froid, et 120 ans (pour les fans de Johnny) s'il se trouve dans un  endroit plus clément et une vie éternelle dans un musée (Vladimir illitch oulianov) mais ce n'est pas l'emplacement normal d'un totem.

Différents type de totems.

Il existe plusieurs sortes de totem, les plus connus sont les immenses totems de 15 mètres de haut , mais il existe de nombreux autres énumérés ci-dessous :

• Le totem de bienvenue. (un peu comme le paillasson "welcome" que l'on trouve sur le palier des appartements).

• Le totem de maison, qui permet de tenir la tenture, un peu comme un chapiteau de cirque.(ils sont généralement par paire)

• Le totem en face de la maison, dans le jardin pour surveiller ce qui se passe au loin (ub oeu comme une camera de video surveillance)

• Le totem porte de tipi, on passe à travers un tronc évidé et gravé pour rentrer dans la maison.

• Le totem Mémorial. C'est le type de totem énorme qui demande une année de préparation.(le totem que l'on connait le plus). Récemment, certains totems ont été fait en utilisant des moyens mécanique avec plusieurs troncs empilés, pouvant atteindre 50 mètres, mais bon là c'est plus du totem règlementaire.

• Le totem mortuaire. (pour recueillir les cendres du mort, un peu comme une urne)

• Le totem commercial (commissions, musées,etc..., qui n'a plus du tout de signification)
• Et le dernier pour la route : le totem de la honte, que l'on érige pour ridiculiser quelqu'un ou bien dénoncer l'esclavage des américains envers les indiens.

Les 3 peuples graveur.

On retrouve 3 sortes de totems chez les amérindiens. Différents styles, différentes techniques (dues en partie à la qualité des outils utilisés). Vous pourrez voir cette indication sur les totems que vous rencontrerez dans les musées ou dans la rue (a Ottawa par exemple)

• Les totems Haïda, du type monumental avec un rapport de taille entre la tête et le corps de ½.

• Tsimshian. Ils sont gravés sur 360° et comporte les couleurs rouge et noir. Le rapport des tête et corps est de 1/3.

• Tlingit. Aux couleurs plus variées tel que le rouge, le noir, le bleu et vert.

Totems évènementiel

L'érection d'un totem n'est pas un acte à prendre à la légère. Cet évènement est fait pour une occasion sociale de grande importance (mariage, naissance, mort, etc...). Il faut environ une année pour préparer le totem, le graver le tailler mais la préparation prend aussi énormément de temps : il faut prévoir assez de nourriture pour le "potlatch", une énorme fête qui dure plusieurs jours et ou toute la tribu prend part. Il faut aussi être extrêmement riche pour fiancer tout ca, généralement les chefs de village ou bien les gens qui ont réussi dans le commerce des fourrures entre les années 1800-1860, une époque très florissante en totems (mais qui n'existent plus 150 ans après leur érection).

Faire un totem est donc complètement dénué de sens si c'est pour une commande d'un musée, ousi il n'y a pas de fête d'inauguration.

Lecture Verticale.

Contrairement à ce que l'on pourrait croire, le totem se lit de haut en bas avec le personnage principal siegant tout en haut du totem et le personnage le moins important situé en bas.
Généralement, le propriétaire du totem possède son animal "totem" en haut du tronc, souvent représenté par un oiseau mystique tel le grand corbeau, l'aigle ou bien l'oiseau-tonnerre (grand oiseau américain faisant le bruit du tonnerre en battant des ailes).

La petite histoire.

Que trouve t-on sur un totem ? Des oiseaux, des poissons, des mammifères, des etres super naturels, des insectes, des plates, des êtres célestes et phénomènes naturels. Et bien le totem est une compilation de ces animaux suivant une histoire réelle (tel grand aigle ayant péché une baleine malgré les attaques de grenouilles) ou bien d'autres histoires issues des comtes et légendes amérindienne. Voici une liste des personnages le plus souvent rencontrés sur les troncs de cèdre.

• Thunderbird.  (L'oiseau tonnerre qui reproduit le son du tonnerre en battant des ailes).

• Le Kolus (cousin du thunderbird)

• le Hokw-Hokw (oiseau monstre dévoreur de cranes)

• Le serpent de mer (qui apporte le bien et le mal)

• Dzoonokwa (une espèce de dame yeti vivant dans les forets du canada. Elle fait "Ooh Ooh" pour effrayer les gens, mais je pense que se montrer est d'avantage effrayant. autrement appelé :"bigfoot" / "sasquatch")

• Les watchmens Ces êtres ont des pouvoirs surnaturels et sont souvent situés en haut des totems. Ce sont les protecteurs du lieu et voient le danger arriver du haut du tronc. On peut identifier la puissance du chef indien qui a érigé le totem en fonction de la taille des chapeaux.Les watchmens

• 2 animaux dont j'ai oublié de marquer le nom. (ce sont des oiseaux en tous cas). Comme le corbeau n'est pas dans la liste de mes animaux, je pense que c'est le corbeau représenté, avec le bec pointé vers le haut et vers le bas, ca dépend du contexte).

• L'aigle. Bec recourbé, et les petits orifices dans le bec sont les principales caractéristiques. (on ne retrouve pas ces orifices sur les autres rapaces)

• Le faucon (hawk).Je suis d'accord avec vous, c'est pas évident de reconnaitre un aigle d'un faucon, de plus pour la traduction j'ai eu assez de mal entre falcon et hawk qui renvoient tous deux à faucon. J'ai essayé d'en savoir d'avantage et il se trouve que ces animaux n'ont pas le même classement en Europe et au états unis, de plus les termes ne désignent pas un oiseau précisément mais une famille d'oiseau. En tous cas, lui n'a pas d'orifice dans le bec, c'est déjà ca pour les différencier.

• L'ours se reconnait grâce à ses dents menaçantes, les oreilles qui dépassent ainsi que le museau rond et les narines aplaties. Ne pas se fier à la couleur sur le totem et associer le brun à l'ours : les troncs ont souvent une couleur brune, du coup l'aigle est brun, les loups sont bruns et les poissons aussi !)

• Le castor. Alors là, c'est facile pour celui là : Le castor a toujours un truc a ronger entre les mains, il a ses deux dents de devant qu'on ne peut pas louper (hormis le confondre avec un lapin), mais il ya  très peu de lapin sur le totem, d'ailleurs peu d'indiens ont un nom de totem "lapin". On reconnait aussi le castor grâce à sa queue plate ornées de petits croisillons. Pour la petite histoire, les castors sont de redoutables rongeurs d'arbre, il peut vous mettre un bouleau de 10 mètres à terre et le débiter en stère en une journée de travail.

• Le loup. On peut parfois le confondre avec l'Ours. Je sais ca parait insensé mais ces deux là, une fois gravés sont très semblables au premier abord. Alors pour les différencier, il faut repérer si l'animal a une posture rampante, si il possède aussi une grande quantité de dent dans la gueule, ca peut aider. On notera aussi ses oreilles à l'affut.

• La grenouille. Pas très imposant comme animal sur un totem me direz vous, et bien oui, la grenouille n'a jamais une grande place sur le totem, elle est représentée petite et souvent caché dans les oreilles ou museaux des autres animaux.

• L'Orque. (nommé tueur de baleine dans la langue de la-bas). Les orques sont des animaux marins (mammifères?... oui), qui sont assez costaud. C'est plutôt une belle bébête et ca doit pas être facile a chasser. Le nom de totem d'orque est souvent attribué à des marins ayant eu le courage d'aller chasser l'orque au harpon dans une coque de noix.(rock'n roll). On le reconnait grâce a son aileron dorsal très vertical ainsi qu'aux deux taches blanches prés de ses yeux. Cependant la taille sur le tronc reste sensiblement égale aux autres animaux.

• La baleine à bosse. On parle ici d'un bestial de plus de 15 mètres de long et quelques dizaines de tonne. C'est le genre de mammifère marin qui vous fait une année de nourriture pour toute la tribu sans problème. Imaginez vous celui qui part en mer pour remplir le frigo.... ca vaut bien un nom de totem ca... On reconnait la baleine au petit orifice placé sur le crane, ses nageoires et sa queue... de baleine.

• Le requin. Plus petits que les deux précédents on le connait surtout car il est passé à hollywood. On reconnaitra sa tête légèrement pointue ainsi qu'une panoplie de dents triangulaires assez impressionnante.

Quelques histoires :

Et bien tous les animaux décrit, entassés les uns sur les autres et racontent la vie de quelqu'un, ou bien une légende comme celle de

• "nanasquet et la baleine"
• "La mere ours."
• "Pourquoi le corbeau est noir ?"

La Légende du corbeau.
"Il y a bien longtemps, presqu'au commencement du monde vivait Aigle-Gris qui était le gardien du soleil, de la lune, des étoiles, de l'eau fraîche et du feu. Aigle-Gris détestait tellement les hommes qu'il gardait ses trésors bien cachés - et ainsi les hommes vivaient dans l'obscurité, sans eau fraîche ni feu.

Aigle-Gris avait une fille très belle dont Corbeau tomba follement amoureux. En ce temps-là Corbeau était un jeune et beau garçon. Pour séduire la fille d'Aigle-Gris, il se transforma en colombe - et ainsi cette dernière l'invita dans la tente de son Père.

Quand Corbeau vit dans la tente, le soleil, la lune, les étoiles et l'eau fraîche qui coulait en abondance, il sut aussitôt ce qu'il devait faire. Il attendit le moment propice et quand personne ne le regarda plus, il s'empara de tous ces trésors ainsi que d'un tison de feu puis s'envola par le trou de la tente - par lequel s'évacue la fumée. Aussitôt dehors, Corbeau accrocha le soleil dans le ciel et de ce fait il y eut tant de lumière qu'il put voler jusqu'à une île au milieu de l'océan. Quand le soleil se coucha, il attacha la lune dans le ciel et accrocha les étoiles en divers endroits. Ainsi avec cette nouvelle clarté il put continuer son vol, transportant avec lui l'eau fraîche et le tison de feu qu'il avait volés.

Il survola l'immensité du pays et quand il arriva au bon endroit il jeta toute l'eau qu'il avait volée. Tombant sur le sol, elle devint là, la source de toutes les ruisseaux, rivières, fleuves et lacs d'eau de ce monde.

Corbeau continuait son vol, tenant en son bec le tison qui brûlait et dont la fumée, noircissait ses plumes blanches. Quand le tison trop près de son bec commença à le brûler, il dut le jeter ; arrivant au sol, ce dernier percuta deux rochers puis se perdit entre eux - c'est la raison pour laquelle, aujourd'hui, si vous frappez deux pierres l'une contre l'autre, le feu en jaillit.

Les plumes de Corbeau ne sont jamais redevenues blanches - après que la fumée du tison les ait noircies - et c'est la raison pour laquelle le Corbeau est aujourd'hui un oiseau noir.

Voila, bon je sais il y a 100 fois plus de choses sur wikipedia mais bon là, c'est du vecu. J'essaye de vous faire un petit papier sur l'histoire des ameridiens pour la suite, pour voir un peu comment que ca s'est passé la-bas depuis christophe Colomb....

Le castor au premier plan !

Alors là, c'est un peu plus compliqué : déjà l'animal le plus en haut je ne le connais pas (probablement un toucan... qui ferait dire que la personne en question serait bavarde), En dessous, on un kwak-kwak, oiseau dévoreur de cerveaux surmonté lui même par des watchmens ayant perdu l'ouïe. La personne était peut être sourde. En dessous se trouve un être humain avec un enfant dans les bras (une femme), surmontée de watchmens de petite importance. Surement la femme du bavard qui s'occupait du petit et qui surveillait les alentours.

Petit dernier pour la route avec une histoire de pécheur. Surement un marin en haut armé d'un harpon surmonté par son totem (un oiseau corbeau, très lié à la présence du soleil, peut être le corbeau lui a indiqué la voie pour les bons coins de pêche). E-dessous, une grenouille énorme, (assez inhabituel) qui surplombe peut être un hibou qui lui aussi surplombe une énorme baleine. (surement une histoire de pèche, mais la je suis un peu a court pour expliquer l'intervention de la grenouille et du hibou...) Comme quoi ca demande plus d'une semaine d'étude tout ca...

As promised, i will propose a summary of my north america culture discoveries, particularily about the totem poles, with few drawings, explanations and serious comments.

When i say totem pole, i think that you have in mind this huge sculpted trunk with a sort of animlal stacking, so this is the totem pole and you allready saw one in a BD, book or maybe in real ! But do you have some idea how that works, what that means or how to read it ?

Totems, or "totem poles" can be found in a particular place in the canada west Coast called the « British Columbia » (Near Vancouver, where the 2010 olympic games will take place). The totems are called « chiefs » over there by the tribes members, and if you want to know more about theses after reading this near-to-reality article, you had to go over there? If it's a bit too far for you, i can suggest you the « musée du quai Branly » in Paris (tips if you go there : first sunday of the month, almost all museums are free in paris, except during summer), but if it's still too far i really can't say where you can find one in ireland !!!

A totem's life ?

The totem is made from Cedar (not the lebanese's one, but those wich come from canada, it's bigger and stronger than maple). It's carved with manual tool (not with bare hands) by experts of wood-carving. Once put in the ground and standing proudly in the landscape, no one is permitted to take care of it : no wood stain, neither stell cables for straighten it up.

It's like a man's life : the totem have a birth and death.

Life is about 80 years (clike the turtles), but it can be shorter (60-50 years, like jackO), if the trunk is exposed to rough weather, and 120 years if it's in a protected area, and finally an eternal life if it is put into a museum (Like Vladimir illitch oulianov), but this is not the true place of a totem

Different kind of totems ?

There are different types of totems. The most known are theses big poles of 15 meters high, but here the full list of totem's and their use :

• The Welcome totem pole. (Working like a «Welcome»doormat on the doorstep of your apartment).

• The House totem, wich is used to support the marquee of the tepee, they often goes by couple like for the big top of the circus tent.

• The totem in front of the house, in the garden, used for watching in the distance and see if troubles are on their way to the house. (nowadays, cctv camera are used for this task)

• The totem door : we go through the totem wich is carved in a very large tree. It is used for the main door of the tent.

• Mémorial totem. This is the famous one, wich require something like one year for the preparation. Some recent totems habe been crafted with mechanical process with several trunks stacked, reaching the 50 meters. They are huge but are not genuine totem in a sense that they had to be build with human forces.

• The mortuary totem. (To collect the ashes, working exactly the same way as a funeral urn).

• The commercial pole(commissioned, for the museums.., this one has absloutely no meaning or signification).

• And the last one : the shame pole, used for ridiculized someone, or to denounce slavery or the past that amercian white did to the natives.

The 3 carvings tribes

3 sort of totems have been found in the northern amercia, with different styles due to the tools used. If you see a real pole, you will see the origin of the totem with the name of the tribe written on the little plate beside the pole.

• Haïda, these are really monumental, with a ratio between head and body of ½.

• Tsimshian. Theses are carved 360° and are painted qith colors like red and black. Ratio between head and body is 1/3.

• Tlingit. Ore colorfull with red black, blue and green.

Party totem

Erecting a totem is not something easy to do. This is done when there is a special event to celebrate such as a weeding, death ot birth. One year is required to prepare the totem pole, find the trunk, carve it, but you have also to prepare the big party and get enough food for the « potlatch", wich is a several days party where all the tribe come. Those who want to erect a totem have to be rich as well and they are on a general manner the tribe's chief or thoses who did well with the furs market during the 1800-1860, a golden age of the totems (but no one of this era is still standing)

So, doing a totem is not free and should be connected to a particular event.

Vertical Reading

We comonly start to read a totem from the ground to the top, but it's false : the most important character is a the top, generally represented by his totem animal, the people for whom the totem have been done stand at the top. Most of the times is there mystical bird, an eagle or thunderbird carved at the top, and rarely a frog or a rabbit....

What's the story about ?

So we have seen that there are several stacked animals, mammiferous, fish, insect , plant and natural phenomenom. Well the totem is a compilation of all theses character to tell a story, a real story or tales from the north american culture. I've put a list of the main characters found in a totem

• The Thunderbird.  (wich makes the sound of thunder when it flaps his wings)

• The Kolus (the thunderbird cousin)

• The Hokw-Hokw (Terrific bird who like to eat brains)

• The sea snake (wich can bring good and evil)

• Dzoonokwa (this is a very tall hairy woman living in the forrests of canada. She do "Ooh Ooh" to scare the people, but showing herself is more frightening. She is also called bigfoot" and "sasquatch".

• The watchmen Ctheses little mens have very strong power and are most of the time on the top of the pole.They are the protector of the tribe and can see the danger coming from abroad. We can identify the strength of the chief with measurung the height of their hats.

• 2 birds i've forgot to write the name down. As the crow isn't in the list, i think theses are the crow, with a beak in different position : looking up and down. The crow is largely used in the totem poles

• The eagle. The beak is curved and there are two orifices on it.(we don't find theses orifices on the other birds).

• Falcon /Hawk . Well, ok if it's not obvious to see the difference between eagle and falcon, furthermore is the translation between hawk and falcon not so obvious as well. The classification of birds is slightly different between europe and america, and theses terms don't design a particular bird but a family of birds. Anyway, this one don't have orifices in the beak when carved, so this will help to make the difference.

• The bear we can recognize the bear thnaks to his teeth, the ears and the rounded muzzle wich show flattened nostrils.Don't trust the brown color of the totem. Brown like a bear, that sounds ok, but sometimes is the eagle brown, the fish and the wolf.

• The beaver. Easy ! The beaver has always something to chew in his hands. You can't miss the tow frontal teeth as well (or maybe confuse with the rabbit, but rabbits are not common on the poles and very few indians have « rabbit » for nickname. We can see also the beaver tails wich is ornated with lattice pattern. For the story, the beavers are really dreadfull lumberjack, they can put a 10 meters high tree in pieces in a one day work.

• The wolf. Well i allready mixed up the bear and the wolf. It sounds weird but they look similar on a pole So for finding a wolf, you had to look at the crawling posture. It get many many teeth as well and the ears wich are lying in wait.

• The frog. This is not a very impressive animal on a totem pole and is usually placed in the ears or nostrils of bigger animals.

• The whale killer. Theses mammiferousare quiet a pretty beast. The kind of fish wich is really hard to fish. This totem is usally given to the courageous fishermen who had the guts to fish barehand with the hrpoon on a cockleshell. We recognise the whale killer thnaks to his huge dorsal fin and the two spots near the eyes.The size on totem pole is generally the same as the other charachters even if this one is really bigger.

• The humpback whale. 15 meters long, more than 10 tons, and you don't want to stay close during the humpback (seen in ireland east coast this week !)? This is the kind of fish wich can provide one year of food for the whole tribe. Then you had to have in mind theses indians sailing the sea into fill the fridge up... it worth the totem name. To recognise it, you will see the hole behind the head the big fins and the tail of a big fish...

• The shark. Smaller than the two previous fish, we know it because his numerous appearrance in the hollywood's blockbusters. His pointed head and his teeth, lot of pointed teeth make him recognizable.

Few stories :

So you have seen the few animals describes, stacked on each other heads. Well it usually means something like a strory or a tale like the following wich are well known over there.

• “Nanasquet and the whale”

• “the bear woman.”

• "Why the crow is black ?"

Why the Raven is black

Long ago when the Earth was very young the Great Spirit was painting the birds along the banks of the river.

He had just finished with Raven's feathers, and Raven was looking at them in the river. But Raven was unpleased and he looked back to the Great Spirit, but he had already gone. He then looked at Eagle, whose feathers he admired very much. Then he noticed that The Great Spirit had left his paints by the river.

Raven asked Eagle to paint him as beautifully as The Great Spirit had painted him, but Eagle refused.

Raven begged Eagle until he finally agreed, Eagle painted Raven and when he was finished he was very pleased.. Raven went to look at his feathers in the river.. He was furious, his feathers where a mess compared to before.. He and Eagle fought, spilling the Great Spirits paints all over Raven, Raven leapt into the river and flapped against the current but the black color would not fade. Seconds later the Great Spirit returned. Raven begged the Great Spirit to paint him again, to fix his ugly feathers, but the Great Spirit refused, and said "Because of your sin of envy you shall learn to value what you have, from this day forward you will remain with Black beak, Black feet, Black breast, and Black eyes.

So here is my little experience about this culture. You may find 1000 more things on wikipaedia but waht i've told is real lived content. I'll make you a paper about the north indian american culture for the next time, to see how it was before christoph columbus and after

The beaver at the front

This one is a bit more complicated... So at the top is there a bird i can't recognise, it may be a toucan but i'm not quite sure.... maybe is the main character of this story very talky, Just under this bird, we can find a Kwak-kwak, bird wich like to eat the brains, overhanged by deafs watchmens. Maybe was the character deaf. Just beneath is there a human caring a baby (maybe a woman), wich is overhanged by watchemns. Maybe was she, the wife of the talky deaf guy wich was caring the baby and watching after his husband as well.

The last one : about a fishermen (can't you see the wahles at the bottom ?) So the guy at the top may be the famous fisherman, using a harpoon for fishing, with the help of a raven(on his head), raven is linked to the sun and is a guide for finding the way back. Just under the fisherman is there a huge frog (quiet unusual) then a Owl (or something like that) and then a big whale (well, as you see, reading a totem pole is not so obvious and i really don't know how to explain this frog and this Owl (wich looks like a fox sometimes), maybe with browsing the tales and indian story can we find more about this story...

Petit appercu de la ceremonie de remise des prix de la competition LUAS ART 2009 qui s'est passée mercredi 20 janvier 2009 au Dublin Notianl College dans les docklands.

J'ai revu des anciens participants de l'année dernière ainsi que les membre de la RPA dont Lynda Stewart, Franck Allen etc....

Aprés les petits fours et le café, la remise des prix s'est faite avec une petite description de chaque oeuvre, une phot o et un commentaire personnel. Pour ma part je suis un « Old Friend » de Franck allen et que la RPA me prosecuterais si je recommence un dessin sur un ligne de tram en service...

Et le vainqueur est...

Le premier prix fut une cravatte en forme de tramway, il y eu d'autres oeuvres aussi, photography, collages, peintures, etc.... Il y a eu moins de participants (entre 65 et 100) cette année contrairement aà l'année dernière malgré les publicités et flyers distribués dans Dublin. Recession artistique aussi ? J'ai revu Jean Pollier aussi, qui malheuresement n'a pas vu son dessin apparaitre dans le calendrier, j'espere le voir incessament sous peu.... c'est du Norman Rockwell ce qu'il fait !

Mois d'avril.

Alors ce que j'ai gagné cet année, c'est un goodie bag ainsi qu'un calendrier (voir fin de l'article pour vous le procurer gratuitement), une clef USB en forme de Luas (la classe) ainsi que l'apparition de mon Oeuvre dans le calendrier...

Here is an littel overview of the third LUAS celabration of the RPA-LUAS art competition 2009, wich took place last wednesday 20 of january at the Dublin National College in the Docklands.

I saw few faces i did recognise from the last year ceremony, and the members of the RPA like Lynda stewart and Franck Allen (CE), and all the public relation crew ...

And the winner is...

The winning entry was a tie with the shape of the Luas on a very serious young hardworker (the meaning of the docklands?), there has been a huge diversity among all the proposed pieces, with photography, paintings, ctrl+C / ctrl+V, and digital media).This competition seems to take an advertisement and illustration side. I've met an old friend there as well, named « Jean pollier »( his drawing) and was a runner' up of the last year competition, but didn't succed in this edition. I've saw his artwork and i really liked it. (here is a link to see what he sent for the competition) I like his style,.. a bit of norman rockwell .

April fool's.

This is my month ! Well my picture is displayed in the calendar at the month of april. I've also won agoodie bag with a teddy bear Luas, a rain jacket (irish are very funny), a Luas Usb key with looks like a luas car (collector) and a small cash prize for buying anything i want anywhere but something not too expensive.

Grâce à pierre (pas moi, un autre), j'ai fait la connaissance d'un réseau de galerie en France dont le but est de vendre des toiles d'artistes. Et pour faire partie de ce carré très select, il faut envoyer un dossier contenant 4 toiles carrées (30 x 30cm ; 20 x 20cm ; 15 x 15cm et 10 x 10cm), ainsi que le dossier dument complété.

Ce réseau de galerie propose des œuvres à un format bien spécifique et pratique des prix fixes par format sans se soucier de la renommée de l'artiste. Je pense qu'ils ont en ce moment même mon dossier sous les yeux (et vous aussi car j'en mis 3 peintures de poissons en photo). J'attends donc leur verdict, mais je veux bien le votre avant le leur....

Thanks to (not me, another pierre), i've discovered a new gallery network in France called "carré d'art", who are selling original artists works in France (few city in France). If you want to be part of the selection, you had to sell 4 originals paintings, square format (30 x 30cm ; 20 x 20cm ; 15 x 15cm et 10 x 10cm), and a description of you work and CV.

This network provide paintings with the same format and a fixed price, so if the artist is famous or not, it's the same price. I think they got my file at the moment and you as well as i've put the picture of 3 of the proposed fish. So, i'm waiting for their reply. and maybe yours ..

J'attends avec impatience la reponse du jury de carré d'art....

Well, as i said , i would like to thank all thoses who did support me last year with buying me pictures. I've paint some fish during christmas holidays, now is there a special limited fish serie which are now going to meet their new lucky owner. (wait for the mailman...)

Here is the gallery of this special limited edition ; discover the one that you did receive and see what's the name of the painting !

So if you want to be part of the limited edition 2010,  you know what you had to do this year ....

PS : Don't forget that fish's eyes are glowing....  : put the fish in front of a light for few minutes, then switch of all the lights and see what happens....

Here i am, back from Canada where i've spent the two last weeks, discovery and interrest into the northern indian american culture. So in this post, i will tell you more about that and other things such the exhibition at the sheds in Clontarf, the exhibition at the Clontarf GAA Club (annual christmas show), my last sales and what the people like to buy (there's something about the fishes...).

I had to warn you about the next exhibitions as well : the Kennedy art gallery christmas show (opening date to be confirmed), an exhibition in Vert le Petit with the opening happening on Friday 4th December and running till end of December.
And the last but not least : an exhibition in Bonnes near poitiers during the week-end of the 12th and 13th December, at the "maison pour tous".

A little big news for the end of the post : i'm a runner up for the Luas art competition 2009 with my drawing on the Luas track :" reach for the stars" It will be on display in the Luas calendar 2010le calendrier RPA 2010 (you can get it in January for free, more about that on the luas website in January)....

1. Oh Canada

Ottawa (Canada Capital)  It's big, it's Cold and they speak american with avery sharp accent, and they speak french but
i can barely understand what they said... I've been lucky to get a week of clear blue sky and be able to get out for sketching.
I've also discovered the north-america indian culture even if it's mainly based in British Columbia. No european influence, great culture
great technic without the influence of the white europeean colon. I will write a dedicated post about this culture next week.
Anyway, it was interresting, and i've refuel the tank of my imagination, and last thing : we can see fish in ottawa on the stell cap on the road !)

2. Exhibition at the sheds

If you didn't get a call from me, it means you didn't won the draw. The happy winner live in Clontarf and is a happy collector of one of my paintings. So about the exhibition : an opening on a friday night wasn't a good idea. In france, we do "vernissage" on friday evening but in ireland, the friday is reserved to the pub and socializing and drinking.
If the drinks have been free, i would have get serious trouble with my wallet, with 150 visitors and 3 paintings sales.
So the friday night was very quiet as i was trying to say and hopefully, the ambassador had declined my invitation, we would have drink a pint staring in each others eyes, ok it wasn't such terrible, i get the visit of famous Irish painter Niall Bracken, the visit of a young emerging artist as well, and even a dog ! (i'm very proud to have had a dog at my exhibition !)
So few figures : 15 visitors on friday, 15 on Saturday and 30 on Sunday afternoon.
I've decided to make the draw on sunday night into get more participant.

The light wasn't great, it was the light from a pub so homy, light and warm but not shiny. So were the paintings a little bit in the dark during the night. However the place was brilliant and very welcoming. Many visitors have discovered a place they have never been before at least. For a party, gig this is the perfect place and the shed's crew is very lovely, thnaks again for all!

I did sell 3 paintings within the 14 exhibited and the law of the invitation have been ower than expected : 6% instead of the 10 % expected. It's good anyway. Just the day before the exhibition, i've put some poster on the clontarf walk and i did get visitors walking around who dodn't get the invitation card.

For the fun : Somebody did phone me after the exhibition and wanted to see a painting again with a better light and if ok was ready to buy it. The painting was the one on draw ! Hopefully, the winner was ok for choosing another one (she did take fish and was very happy of it).

3. Exhibition at the Clontarf GAA Club
I missed the opening, i was flying back to the old continent. I didn't saw this huge opening with 130 attendant !. I did look a tit on the saturday and i'v e saw the 250 paintings on show, very impressive and huge organisation, big round of applause for mary ! The 2009 edition was less successfull than last year, mainly due to recession but few sales anyway.(20 sold paintings among the 250, and 2 of mine are in the 20 !).

4. Kennedy Art Galerie Christmas Show.

As usual, the christmas show of the kennedy gallery will be on show during january and december.
I still don't know the time and date, but will happen during the next two weeks. I've put two of my fish at the exhibition (surprise to thoses who will go to the kennedy !)

5. Exhibition of the Vert le Petit's artists.

So this month, big exhibition in Vert le petit (my hometown), at the public library.
"Les peintres Vertois". We will be 3 painters to exhibit and i will present a selection of fish,irish landscapes and vert le petit scapes.
For thoses who are around, the opening is done and will run till end of december. friday
location : Espace J.L.  Barrault.

6. Exhibition in Bonnes

Another exhibition in December in France, but further to the south : Bonnes near Poitiers. Thnaks to Michel to deal with that as i won't be there till the day before the exhibition.
I will bring some stuff from ireland and exclusive work... never seen before. The official opening is on saturday the 12th at the "Maison pour tous" of Bonnes.

7. LUAS Art Competition

I've received a letter in december from the RAP LUAS agency telling me that i was runner-up of the art competition 2009.
This is not the first price but it's great anyway : i will be in the luas calendar (wich month ?), at the prize ceremony (Shelbourne hotel !)!, and will be shoot by photograph !

I'm very happy ! I will do some drawings on the pavement for the event !

Voilà, je suis de retour du Canada ou j'ai passé deux semaines formidables et ou j'ai pu me ressourcer et explorer de nouvelles voies artistiques. Je vais aussi vous parler de mon exposition au sheds, comment ca s'est passé, ainsi que ma dernière expo au club de GAA, (sport typiquement irlandais) et les ventes réalisées, car je sais que ca intéresse les gens de savoir si j'ai vendu (pour indice, les poissons partent à une vitesse éclair).

Il Faut aussi que je vous informe des prochaines expositions, comme celle du christmas show à la Kennedy gallery de Dublin (date d'ouverture à confirmer), une exposition à Vert le petit dont l'ouverture se fera le prochain vendredi et une exposition à Bonnes aussi, pour le week end du 12-13 Décembre.

Et une petite nouvelle pour la fin : J'ai été sélectionné en tant que finaliste pour le concours du LUAS 2009 (membre des 12 deuxièmes ex-aequos) avec mon dessin a la craie sur rails de tramway :" atteindre les étoiles" et je serais présent dans le calendrier RPA 2010 (calendrier gratuit que vous pourrez vous procurer gratuitement sans frais de port des janvier prochain, envoyer moi un mail et je vous fournirais toutes les infos)....

1. Ma cabanne au Canada

Ottawa (Capitale du Canada)  c'est grand, c'est froid aussi et ca parle Américain avec un accent à couper au couteau et ca parle Quebecois, exactement comme une imitation de Celine Dion par Laurent Gerra. J'ai eu la chance d'avoir eu une semaine de beau temps pendant le séjour, et m'as permis de crayonner sur mon carnet à croquis. J'ai aussi exploré la culture amérindienne des indiens (même si c'est l'Ouest du canada où elle est le plus développée). Énorme culture qui a eu si peu d'influence de la part de l'homme au visage pâle. Je vous parlerais de ca plus en détail dans un prochain article... en tous cas, j'ai fait le plein d'idées et j'ai matière pour mes prochaines peintures. (Les bouches d'égout au canada sont en forme de poisson !)

2. L'Expo au sheds

Si vous n'avez pas reçu de coup de téléphone comme quoi vous avez remporté la peinture, c'est que vous n'avez pas gagné ! L'heureuse gagnante habite Clontarf et a remporté sa peinture après avoir participé au tirage au sort.

Alors l'idée d'une ouverture d'une expo dans un pub un Vendredi soir était une très mauvaise idée :  heureusement que la boisson n'était pas gratuite car j'aurais eu droit a 150 visiteurs éméchés. Donc très peu de monde et là aussi, encore heureux que l'ambassadeur ne s'est pas déplacé car on aurait bu une pinte en tête à tête. Bon j'exagère un peu : il y a eu quand même du monde, environ 15 personnes le vendredi, 15 autres le samedi après midi et une trentaine le Dimanche après midi.( j'ai même eu la visite d'un chien !!!)

J'ai prolongé le tirage au sort jusqu'au dimanche soir et avoir le maximum de participants. La lumière n'était pas optimale et les peintures était dans l'ombre à la nuit tombée. Mis à part ca, le cadre était original et vraiment chaleureux.

Quelques nombres : J'ai eu une trentaine de participants au tirage au sort, 60 visiteurs environs et 3 toiles vendues sur les 12 affichées. Et pour vérifier la loi des invitations, je n'ai eu que 6%  au lieu des 10 % prévus, c'est bien quand même. La pub sur la promenade a bien marché également car j'ai eu des visiteurs n'ayant pas eu de cartons d'invitations qui sont venus me voir.

La petite histoire : Une personne m'a téléphone le lendemain pour revoir une toile sous un meilleur éclairage et probablement l'acheter. Et la toile en question était la toile du tirage au sort. Du coup la gagnante a été d'accord pour en choisir une autre et finalement elle a pris des poissons qui lui ont fait très plaisir. (Croyez le ou pas mais la moyenne d'age des collectionneurs de poissons est de 45 ans)

3. L'expo au Club de GAA.

Raté de si peu (j'étais dans l'avion retour), je n'ai pu assister au vernissage (130 personnes à l'ouverture !), je suis passé hier faire un tour et j'ai vu les 250 œuvres encadrés dans le GAA Club, c'était assez impressionnant. Il y a eu moins de succès par rapport à l'année dernière du à la récession mais quand même quelques ventes (20 sur le total des 250, avec 2 de mes toiles dans le lot).

4. Kennedy Art Galerie Christmas Show.

Le christmas show annuel aura lieu comme d'habitude à la Kennedy galerie. Je ne connais pas la date du vernissage mais cela aura lieu surement dans les deux prochaines semaines. Deux de mes toiles seront accrochées (je vous laisse la surprise de découvrir les toiles si vous passez par là).  Indice : ce sont des poissons !

5. Les peintres Vertois à Vert le Petit

Je serais en France à partir de mardi prochain (si le temps me permet de prendre le Ferry car c'est la tempête en ce moment), et l'exposition aura lieu pendant le mois de décembre à la bibliothèque municipale de Vert le Petit.

"Les peintres Vertois". On sera 3 peintres à exposer nos Œuvres, et je présenterais une sélection de poissons ainsi que quelques toiles de Vert le Petit réalisées il y a un peu plus longtemps.

Pour ceux qui seront dans les parages, je vous invite au vernissage qui aura lieu vendredi 4 décembre à 18h30 à l'espace J.L.  Barrault.

6. Exposition à Bonnes

Une autre exposition aura lieu en Décembre, à Bonnes prés de Poitiers. Merci à Michel de s'occuper de tout ca, j'amènerais des exclusivités pour l'occasion.  Vernissage prevu Le samedi 12 Décembre à la Maison pour tous de Bonnes.

7. LUAS Art Compétition

Et pour finir, cette petite lettre que j'ai reçu dans la boite aux lettres, m'indiquant que mon œuvre avait été sélectionné pour le concours. Ce n'est pas le premier prix mais j'aurais quand même droit à mon mois dans le calendrier !

Réception l'année prochaine en Janvier, au Shelbourne Hotel, photos, etc... Je suis super content ! J'irais faire quelques dessins à la craie pour l'occasion !

A suivre  dans les prochains articles : l'art indien d' Amérique du Nord, les Molas et l'exposition de David Hoffos qui m'a vraiment impressionné. (et des mises a jours des peintures poissons et quelques photos des expos !)

What i did theses last few days ?

PaperBoy, this guy who post all the papers, leaflets and junk mails (but mine aren't) in the mailboxes of the neighbourhood. It was a very trying experience as i didn't expect to be walking so much : mailboxes here in ireland aren't like in France and the mailboxes are on the entry door and not at the gate. This results in 2 main issues :

• You had to walk from the gate to the door, then back to the gate and go on to the next house. (20 meters to walk at each house because you just can't go from one door to another because of this small wall, schrub or fence between the doors of the semi-detached/terraced houses).
• Second issue : The mailboxes have a very complicated mechanism, with 3 things to go through : a first hinged section you had to lift, then a double brushes device where you had to put the letter between and finally, a second hinged section you had to push with you left hand (wich is literraly entering the house through the mailbox). So after that, you hat to gently push the post into it, and watch the mail falling down. You're happy then and ready to go for another post... and don't forget to take your left hand out of this in a gently manner, because it really hurts when you do it abruptly.

Invitation Law.
Well, this is a famous law called that way "the invitation law" wich says that amount of people who will come to the exhibition is equal to 10% of the amount of invitation sent. I wanted 100 people, so i did make print 1000 invitations. And i will check tonight if the law is still right or not.
