Ce week end, c’était la seconde édition du marche d’art a stephen green, Dublin. J’y ai participé en espérant avoir plus de succès que la dernière fois.

Premier jour : j’ai voulu tester mes peintures fraichement encadrées, les peintures à l’huile et acryliques (les poissons). Ben, pas vraiment beaucoup de succès, les gens passaient devant et repartaient. Ce qui a foiré c’est le fait que j’avais deux styles vraiment différents, ce qui a nuit à attirer l’attention des gens. Certains m’ont demandé si c’était la même personne qui a peint les différentes peintures. Du coup j’ai décidé de faire différemment pour les jours d’après.

Deuxième jour : Le samedi est assez passant, surtout avec les adultes qui vont faire du shopping. J’ai misé sur les peintures à l’huile ce jour là et garder les poissons pour le lendemain. Les gens ont admiré les peintures, mais les seules ventes aperçues ce jour là étaient des aquarelles de fruits et légumes. Les voisins m’ont confié que cette année était particulièrement difficile pour les ventes. J’ai donc remballé les huiles qui vont aller dans Dublin nord là ou elles auront plus de succès. Ne restait que le dimanche avec les poissons, et le besoin de trouver une bonne idée pour réussir enfin a attirer l’attention.

Dernier Jour : Dimanche matin, c’est pas vraiment un moment d’affluence a Dublin : les pubs sont fermés et les irlandais a la messe, du coup, j’ai décidé de venir l’après midi avec une bonne idée en tête : venir avec la fresque de poissons et proposer les petits poissons à la vente. Je suis arrivé vers 2h30 puis j’ai installé les 4 panneaux tout à la fin de l’expo : la dernière chose vue par les visiteurs . J’ai utilisé 4 pitch au lieu des deux alloués (personne ne viendraient s’installer après moi). Deja, gros succès en installant mes poissons, les personnes ont bien discuté avec moi et comme toujours les enfants (de 7à 77 ans) se sont arrêtés. Je n’ai cependant pas eu de chance à la vente mais j’aurais vraiment du commencer par ca dés le début. Je sais quoi faire pour les prochaines… (pas de photo de ce jour là , j’ai oublié mon appareil photo).

Well, this week end was the last edition of the stephen green art fair. So i have tried to be more successfull than the august edition.

First day : I wanted to exhibit my brand new framed pictures, oil paintings. and my framed fishes as well. Well, no real success as people just walk, look and walk away. What went wrong was the fact that two different styles showned is not really efficient to catch up the attention. People were asking me f i was the artist who did all these.

Second day :Â Saturday is busy with adults going shopping, so i decide to exhibit the oil instead of the fish and focus on one style only.So people did stop and watch the paintings, butthe few sales i saw that daywere watercolor of pear and apple.Neighboors told me that this year was really not a good year for this kind of event. Well, my oil will go back to northside and will have more success over there.Sunday was a dedicated for fish then… but stillhad to find a very good catch up.

Last day :Sunday morning is not a time to show anything in Dublin (pubs are closed, everyone is at the mass), so i came in the afternoon with a good idea for the day : showing the big fresco. SO i came around two and put my fresco at the dead end of stephen green (i was using 4 pitches instead of my 2 allowed). I had many many succes while putting up the pictures. I wish i had this idea sooner… So peoples were stopping, specially thoses with childrens. Unfortunately, i did no sales (like everyone that day), but i had a very good succes. I now know what to show for the next one. (no picture that day, i forgot my camera).

I will be at the next peoples art exhibition in Stephen green, on the 21,22,23th August. An open air show around the railings of St Stephens green in dublin city.This will be an official first experiment.

Je serais à Stephen green le week end du 21-22-23 Aout pour l’expo en plein air annuelle. Ce sera la premiere experience officielle du genre (cf article precedent).

Je vous donne mon emplacement dés que je l’aurais…

La journée du vernissage est une journée très éprouvante, car plusieurs facteurs rentrent en jeu en même temps : L’accrochage des peintures et la mise en place de toute l’expo, tout doit être prêt avant l’heure d’ouverture et l’attente des invités qui vont venir voir l’expo : qui viendra ? les amis viendront ils ?, les journalistes feront ils le déplacement, les stars seront elles là ? Et “THE” question …Vais je vendre des toiles ?

Maintenant que j’ai passé mon premier vernissage, je peux répondre aux questions :

L’installation de l’expo.
J’étais bien surpris par la contenance de la voiture en y mettant les 48 toiles à exposer. Tout tient, même les grands formats de 2 mètres sur 1. C’était un point à éclaircir sachant que je voulais limiter le nombre d’aller retour entre la maison et le loft. Un autre travail de préparation fut la réalisation des cartels “prêt à fixer”, un gros travail surtout pour le sciage des rehausses des cadres (un post sera écrit sur la réalisation de ces nouveaux cartels qui ont fait effet à l’expo d’ailleurs).
La disposition des toiles.

Disposer les toiles est un exercice très divertissant, mais sur lequel il faut se mettre d’accord rapidement avant que l’heure de l’ouverture arrive. J’ai d’abord opté pour une disposition de type aquarium composée de poissons sur tous les côtés de la salle mais l’effet était trop fort pour l’Å“il. A suivi une disposition alternée peinture à l’huile et peinture poisson. Les huiles ont eu une place ensoleillée au lieu d’être reléguées dans l’annexe de la salle.

L’attente.

Bien crevé aprés toutes ces heures d’installation, on patiente avant l’ouverture officielle des portes. Ce moment est particulièrement stressant étant donné qu’on ne sait pas qui viendra, combien de personne vont venir, bref le stress.

La première vente.

LEs invités arrivent au compte goutte et il est important d’aller les saluer chacun. Puis quelques minute splus tard arrive la première vente : le premier à avoir payé remporte la toile. “Cold Fish” (merci Niall) a donc été la première vente de la soirée. Il faut alors s’empresser de disposer un petit poisson “sold” sur le cartel prévu à cet effet. C’est à ce moment que la tension redescend et que l’on peu souffler un peu et discuter avec les invités.

Les commentaires reçu par l’audience.

Après quelques discussions, reviennent quelques questions récurrentes ainsi que l’appréciation des gens. Il faut accepter toutes les critiques et faire confiance à ce que des yeux neufs pensent des peintures. On passe ensuite au réponses aux questions : “pourquoi les poissons ?”.

“le poisson est un personnage très simple : passe sa vie à manger, dormir et faire des petits poissons. Doté d’une mémoire très courte, il est “le” personnage candide, sympathique que l’homme fût il y a quelques millions d’années avant de sortir de l’eau pour aller à la conquête de l’espace. Le monde aquatique reste encore très inconnu de l’homme. Hormis la pèche et l’aquariophilie, l’homme ignore et massacre ce qu’il y a de plus riche sur la planète bleue.”

TOP 5 des peintures les plus appréciées.

Certaines peintures on eu plus d’impact que d’autres, je vais essayer de me rappeler lesquelles elles sont :

Nicolas, ta peinture a fait des envieux…Â les gens ont redécouvert le pont le plus affreux de Dublin (loopline bridge), la fresque a un air de “where is wally” selon certain. Les gens ont trouvé les shelters art-deco pas si mal que ca et enfin l’invitation a fait le plus grand effet.

Le lendemain.
Sincèrement, je ne m’attendais pas à autant de monde le lendemain de l’ouverture. Un peu moins de monde par rapport à l’ouverture mais du monde quand même. Beaucoup de monde qui ne pouvaient venir lors de l’ouverture, et d’autres avertis la veille. La publicité dans ce genre d’événement est très importantes les quelques jours avant. On a plié vers les8PM, avec l’aide de mains supplémentaires (merci à : Estelle, Floriane, Stuart, Alex, Ainoa, Isabel ainsi que anna et roberta).

Maintenant il faut emballer les toiles vendues et les apporter aux heureux propriétaires… et avant de nous quitter, les photos de l’expo pour tout ceux qui veulent revoir un peu du

“Monde du Silence”…les photos.

The day of the exhibition is a very long and stressful day, because of few technical factors : hanging the paintings, setting the whole paintings, everything had to be ready before the T time and finally waiting the guests who come specially for the exhibition: who will come ? do the friends will be there ?, will the journalists come? and what about the stars ? and the final question : How much paintings will i sold ?

Now that the private view is done i can answers all the questions :

Hang up the exhibition.
I was quiet surprised by the car capacity, and was able to cary the 48 canvas to be exhibited. Everything was fitting in the boot, even the big sized canvas of 2 meters x 1 meters. It was the black point to enlight before the exhibition : i wanted to make only one journey between the home and the Backloft. An other work was the preparation for the realisation of the cartels “ready to put”, a big work, specially about sawing the little wooden pieces (i will write more about that, it was well remarked by the audience).
Pictures arrangment.

Showing the pictures is a very entertaining exercise, but had to be done a long time before the opening. I was thinking first about a 360 fidh organisation, like a dive in a aquarium. i finally changed my mind as it was to intense for the eyes and that the oil paintings where relegate in the side room without natural light.

Waiting time.

A bit tired after all that i had deserve a little rest. So i’ve been waiting one hour , a very stressfull time as you don’t know who will come, neither the number of guests. So the next time, i’ll try to finish 5 min before the opening….

The first sale.

Guest are arriving, and it’s really imprtant to welcome each of them. and few minutes after is the first sale happening : the first to pay is the first to get the painting. “Cold Fish” (thanks to Niall) have been the first to be sold of the night. I then get my sold red dots out of my pocket and put one on the cartel. This is a good sign and pressure ease after that. A good occasion to talk with the guests then.

The Comments.

After few chats, the few same questions occurs and the audiance tastes as well. So, accept all the critics and trust the people taste because you don’t have fresh new view of your paintings… then the big answer to the big question “Why do i paint Fishes ?”.

“because Fish is a very basic character : he spent his life swimming, eating, sleeping and make little fishes. A very short memory, he is the perfect candid, nice guy like the human being used to be few millions years ago, before leaving the water for the land and heading toward the space quest. The silent world is and stay a very mysterious world for the mankind. Except the fishing and fish keeping, the man ignore and omme ignore and ruin the richest part of the blue planet.”

TOP 5 pictures.

Few paintings had a very strong impact, here are the few selected by the audience :

Nicolas, your picture was very coveted…Â people have rediscovered the ugliest bridge of Dublin (loopline bridge), the fresco reminds the “where is wally” according to some. And people really liked a different vision of the art-deco shelters, and finally the invitation had a very stunning effect to many of you

The day after.
Sincerely, i didn’t expect to see so much people during the day after. A bit less than the opening, with thoses who weren’t able to come on wednesday, thoses who were invited the evening before. Advertisement during this kind of event is particularily important thes few days before. We have then packed up everything with a lot of extra and very welcome extra hands (Thanks to : Estelle, Floriane, Stuart, Alex, Ainoa, Isabel and anna & roberta).

So now, i had to pack the sold paictures and bring them to their happy new owner… and before the end of this post, i propose you to browse the pictures taken during the exhibition

“The Silent World”…the pictures.

Before the exhibition, many many (millions) things happens, for example just at the time i write this article, it’s D-2 and i still send invitation cards, (till the last moment), i spent my time here and there to solve tricky problems, building up mailing lists and phone list to remind the people that wednesday is the day and so on…

So here is a little summary of my last 20 things to do …

• write an article to be published in an art bulletin
• make direction poster
• list all the paintings
• Give a fair price to all the paintings
• Make the cartels
• plan to get the keys for the backloft
• give invitation card to the gallery owners, hand to hand
• Collect the paintings hanged up in the sheds
• by glass stufffor the cartels
• buy wine for the exhibition (good wine)
• buy glasses inti drink the wine.
• find some help to hang the paintings up
• put poster averywhere people mayinterrested to come.
• Stretch the last unstretched paintings.
• Make a random distribution of invitation cards in Dublin, with the help of custom stones. (see picture).
• Stay calm and quiet without thinking about the exhibition (if people will come or not (10% of the invited people come according to Niall… a bit frightening).

Well here is the beginning, more stuff is to come, specially the stuff govern by random law and murphy’s law, such as hanging picture stick cartels to the walls and borderline effects. Good nap planned for friday.

Alors avant l’exposition, il se passe une foule de choses, par exemple là , on est J-2 et je distribue encore des invitations (jusqu’au dernier moment), je cours à droite et à gauche pour trouver les bricoles qui manquent au dernier moment, je fais des mailing liste et phone liste pour rappeler au gens que l’exposition est mercredi, etc….

Voici un appercu de la to do liste de ces derniers jours :

• annonce de l’expo dans un bulletin spécialisé
• Réalisation d’affiches directrices
• Faire la liste des toiles
• Mettre le prix sur les toiles
• Réaliser les cartels
• Récupérer les clefs de la salle d’exposition
• Inviter les galeristes déjà rencontré
• Récupérer les toiles exposées au sheds
• acheter des sous verres pour les cartels
• acheter du vin pour l’expo
• acheter les verres pour boire le vin
• trouver de l’aide pour installer l’expo.
• Â mettre des affiches dans les endroits où il y a des gens susceptible de venir.
• tendre les dernieres toiles
• Distribuer des invitations au hasard soutenues par des cartes de visites “cailloux”, voir photo.
• Lutter contre le stress de savoir si il y aura du monde qui viendra à l’expo (10% des invites distribuées selon Niall… çà fait peur quand même).

Donc là , c’est que le début, il reste encore plein de choses qui suivent regies par les lois de murphy tel que l’accrochage des toiles, des cartels et tout ce qui s’ensuit. Repos prevu vendredi.

Where is the Backloft ?

‘The Silent World’ is the first Solo show of Dublin based artist Pierre-Emmanuel Godet.

The exhibition will present a serie of Fish-based paintings, merging the audience into a modern underwater diving experience, like the famous Oceanographer J-Y Cousteau did in the 1950′s movie “The Silent World”, with a pop-art perception this time…

An opening reception will be held on Wednesday 8 July 2009 from 6 to 8pm and it will be on show Thursday 9 July from 12 to 8 pm.

Pierre-Emmanuel Godet is a self taught Artist, and officialy working as a full time job painter since January 2008. He is living and working in Dublin. He is the winner of the RPA-Luas Art competition 2008 with the “Jungle Luas”, exhibited at the Kennedy Gallery and made several exhibitions in Dublin City libraries , and more particulary a 15 days live performance in the ILAC Central Library.

Well, the date are set : the private view of the silent world will take place on wednesday 8 july 2009, from 6 to 8pm.

The invitation card design is in progress, they will be printed tomorrow and be mailed around this week end. Who will receive an invitation card then ?
