niall h bracken This time, you will join me into the gallery, as i made my first gallery experience last week. I was with Niall.H.Bracken (i just put his signature instead of his picture, cause he don’t like to be framed), he is a brilliant artist i’ve met at his private view of his exhibition in Kennedy art gallery. So we discuss around a very unstable table, it was really interresting, then we have been to the very famous place in Dublin for visitin the galleries : stephen green.

rubicon gallerie The art Gallery :”is space for the exhibition of art, usually visual art. Paintings are the most commonly displayed art objects; however, sculpture, photographs, illustrations, installation art and objects from the applied arts may also be shown. Although primarily concerned with providing a space to show works of visual art, art galleries are sometimes used to host other artistic activities, such as music concerts or poetry readings.”

When you don’t know, it’s quiet intimidating to enter the gallery, it’s not just like a museum because we can buy the art piece. Will there be a guy with you for selling the art, will you have to pay something, are we gonna ask you your personnal feelings about the exhibition, well, let’s go first for a count for nothing visit…

First the entrance door, just push it and enter a first room with paintings hanged at the walls. You may see somebody inside, hidden behind a desk and computer. He is here just for providing more informations or payment facilities. He won’t jump on as if you were the first visitor of the last few years.(if i found one just like that, i will give you the name of the gallery…)

So, what’s next for the visit ?

Visiting tools.

kerlin gallerie First tool : Once entered, you just say hello to the gallerykeeper. (just be polite as usual), grab a paper provided on the desk with the name of all the paintings, the price (oh!) and the size. I said oh just because it always make a strange effect when reading the price. (click to try the “oh effect” effect)….

taylor gallery Second usefull tool : a good sight, if you don’t have, well just use adapted glasses. You will then be able to find the number of the painting and the associated name, size and price on your paper. (“oh effect” for the second time). YOu should have a good sight for finding this number cos gallery like to write very tiny little number for heavy huge massive prices (sometimes it’s worth, sometimes it doesn’t worth)..

Well now you get everything for strolling freely in the gallery, discover, admirate, hate the pictures. And if you’re lucky you will even find seats for giving a rest to your legs. (just like in the museum). Next step, and the most important ….

I like / I don’t like. Just like the game you used to play at school. Say your feelings when watching the paintings. If you don’t really know , if you are asking yourself this question : “I’m not sure if i like it, i don’t really understand” Just ask yourself : is the painting make me a felling, is the painting talking to me ? If it’s taling, just say i like it. If the painting don’t speks to you, just say : “i don’t like it” (even if the price shown have 4 “0″ in it).

You can get the name of the artist if you like the painting, subscribe to his mailing list to be invited at the next private view of the exhibition. How to do it ? Well you have an open book in the neighbourhood, maybe next door to the leflets you took… Just put your name date and address on it and a small text saying you really like and want to be warned for the next exhibition… so simple.

origin gallerie Don’t pay too much attention to the price. Endless stories, you don’t really understand, even the buyer don’t really understand, but if he have the money you know… Just train your artistic tastes, then you will be able to find the appropriate gallery wich match your tastes, and then you will find the perfect artwork you can afford and that you like. So many artist nowadays…

be patient, train your tastes and have nice visits…

Small hints about the galleries i’ve visited in Dublin 2.

  • Origin Gallery : (Naomi Brosnan exhibit: don’t like)
  • Taylor gallery : (Tim goulding exhibit: don’t like)
  • Kerlin gallery : (Merlin James exhibit : don’t like)
  • Rubicon Gallery, (Liam O’callaghan : Like !!!. (The big pink is a must see !!)).

So it’s enough for today, so it’s up to you now!! …and ah yes by the way, your tastes will change after each visits. So don’t focus too much on the artist you don’t like, maybe you will like them later… This is the art magic and the mind magic.. so simple and so complicated at the same time…
